Argentine Teenager Breaks Sergio Aguero Two Decade Record
An Argentine teenager broke Sergio Aguero's 21-year-old record by making his professional debut at the age of 14 years and 29 days in the Copa Argentina round of 32 match on Thursday. Mateo Apolonio who was born in April 2010 came on from the bench to replace 33-year-old Gonzalo Bravo (who made his debut before Mateo was born) in the 84th minute of Deportivo Riestra's 1-0 defeat by Newell's Old Boys and thus broke Aguero's previous record of 15 years and 35 days set on July 2003 when he was subbed in the 65th minute for Independiente against Club Atletico San Lorenzo de Almagro.
And while Aguero impressed with a decent performance that was well received by the media, Apolonio's record setting appearance and performance were termed as unnecessary and a disaster by a big portion of the press and fans.
During his 12 minutes on the pitch, the young full-back made zero clearances, won zero areal duels and completed only 2 of his 8 attempted passes, a display that left many fuming at the Riestra manager Cristian Fabbiani over his decision to sent in the kid who he insisted is very well developed for his age.
Even though it was a historic day for the young Apolonio, he had to be protected and escorted from the pitch by the seniors players and staff when a fight broke out between the two teams after the final whistle. Hopefully, the 14-year-old will build on his debut and follow in the steps of Aguero who went to enjoy a golden career at Atletico Madrid, Manchester City before his abruptly retirement due to a heart condition while playing for Barcelona in 2021.
Meanwhile, the controversy sparking senior debut by Apolonio does not come close to the current first division record of 12 years, 11 months and 28 days set by former Bolivian midfielder Mauricio Baldivieso for Aurora in July 2009, courtesy of his father who managed the club at the time.
