NGolo Kante s Club Signs Paul Pogba s Brother
Royal Excelsior Virton has signed Florentin Pogba. The Belgian 3rd tier side took to X on Thursday to announce that they had secured the services of Paul Pogba's elder brother as part of a wide recruitment drive of experienced players in pursuit of promotion to the Challenger pro League after finishing 10th in the 2023-24 season, which was their first following their relegation last year.
"We are delighted to announce the signing of Florentin Pogba. In preparation of the start of the season, Florentin will bring to Virton his rich experience of 300 professional matches," read part of their statement.
Having played for 5 seasons in the French League 1 and in Europa League with St Etienne as well as in League 2, Turkish League, the MLS with Atlanta United and the Indian Super league, the 33-year who last played in 2023, is expected to help boost the team's defense that conceded 54 goals last season as they hope finish in promotion positions in the 2024-25 season.
It is actually an interesting signing considering that the club is owned by Florentin's brother's French national teammate, N'Golo Kante who bought the club last summer following his lucrative switch to Saudi side Al-Ittihad.
Apart from ensuring the signing the Guinea international to improve the squad, Kante has steered the club towards an overall improvement having invested in the upgrade of the home stadium, training center as well as in the restart of the club's academy that was closed due to financial constraints before he took over.
It only remains to be seen whether Kante's continued support to the club that produced Belgium internationals Thomas Meunier and Timothy Castagne into rising to the Belgian top flight for the first time in their history.
