Pep Guardiola Says Saudi Arabia Has Changed Football Transfer Market

As the Saudi Arabian league club continue to splash outrageous contract offers at European clubs' players, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that the Saudis have changed the market. "When Ronaldo was the only one, no one thought this many top players would go there. And in future there will be more. Clubs need to be aware of what's happening. Riyad Mahrez got an incredible offer and we could not say don't do it. Saudi Arabia have changed the market," said Pep after Riyad joined Saudi pro-League side Al-Ahli.

While Manchester City have been known to posses deep pockets courtesy of their Emirati owners, Saudi Arabia's financial muscles of offering Mahrez $968,000 per week which is more that 4 times the $205,000 he earned at Manchester, is a clear indication that they mean business.

Pep further suggested that Saudi Arabia is now a threat to European leagues who have for decades basked at the top of the transfer market pyramid. "Saudi is not about to be a threat, it is a reality. They want to create a strong league. The Premier League spent more than the others because the organization is better and broadcast rights are bigger. For Saudi League, I don't know how long they will sustain their spending, but players now want to take the challenge and play there," added Pep.

As the European league fans and stakeholders continue to cry foul and complain about Saudi Arabian ridiculous spending, the Saudi Public Investment Fund, PIF, which is backed by the oil-rich Saudi Kingdom, has a reported war chest of over $25 billion to spend on improving the sports in the country. So as Pep says, there will definitely be more players heading Eastwards.
